We are excited to welcome Jess Bastidas, student teacher from Maryland Institute College of Art, who will be working with Ms. Melone this Spring! Here is a little of what they have planned to keep our kids creative in the classroom! Dear Parents,
My name is Miss Jess and I am really looking forward to working with all of your wonderfully creative children! I am finishing my Master’s in Art Education from the Maryland Institute College of Art and as part of my student teaching placement, I will have the pleasure of working alongside Miss Melone for the next seven weeks. In class, I hope that we can uncover the role of artmaking in our world, art as a form of communication and expression, and learn more about the elements of art. I will be bringing in some new materials so that students can explore everything from sculpture to mixed media so PLEASE have your children bring in a t-shirt or smock that they can get messy in! In the art classroom, all students are researchers working through inquiry to develop their critical thinking skills and problem-solve collaborative and creative solutions. Additionally, students learn to develop open-mindedness, test new perspectives, and honor divergent ways of being in an inclusive and interconnected community of makers. Finally, art has the capacity to transfer to diverse content areas so that, in the world outside the classroom, students can be empowered to advance as independent, self-directed, lifelong learners. Looking forward to working with and learning from all of your young artists!
