Dear Parents -

A Word to the Wise
Please refrain from double parking outside the
Elementary School during morning drop-off
and afternoon pick-up.

This is a disruption to the neighborhood and a safety issue for our students. We appreciate all our parent's commitment to common sense, school spirit and safety.

Thank you to all the parents who attended the first PTA Meeting of the school year. Topics included an overview of goals for the PTA, an introduction of the board members, ideas for fundraising or "fun"raising, and opportunities for new student activities and events as well as musc and art enrichment.

Specific ideas for fundraising included a Storybook Themed School Dance, International/Diversity Celebrations, monthly performances and movie nights. Parent Committees are forming now.

Maryland's Common Core State Standards

Asst Principal, Amber Kilcoyne, led an informative discussion of Maryland's new state curriculum: The Common Core State Standards in mathematics and reading/English Arts.

Many parents and teachers asked good questions last night about the strengths and challenges of the new curriculum. For more information, parents were provided with a FAQs handout, recommended the into video (on the right). In addition, parents should contact their classroom teacher with any questions about their child or the changes in the classroom. Parent teacher conferences are coming soon!

These standards form the foundation for Maryland's new state curriculum. Maryland launched a broad-based, year-long process to revise its curriculum to align with the new standards. The curriculum Framework, the foundation of the new curriculum, was presented to the State Board in June 2011, and the completed curriculum will be implemented in Maryland schools in the 2013-2014 school year.
